What is Identity Theft?
Identity Theft involves criminals obtaining your personal information such as social security numbers, credit card or account numbers, even birth certificates and passports for their own use. Accounts are opened in your name for credit cards and loans and the bills are not paid. The delinquent account is reported on your credit report. Because the bills are being sent to another address, it could take months to learn you are a victim of identity theft.

At Select Bank & Trust, we have the highest standard when it comes to protecting our customer’s financial privacy and will work with you to help prevent and detect Identity Theft. Our goal here at Select Bank & Trust is to provide the best customer service possible, including keeping our customers apprised of possible threats to your privacy.

ID Theft Actions
The Federal Trade Commission has introduced an education program—called AvoID Theft: Deter, Detect, Defend—to help consumers avoid becoming victims of identity theft. The program's materials include a victim recovery guide, a training booklet and a 10-minute video.

What to do if you're a victim of ID Theft
If you suspect your identity may be compromised or you are a victim of ID Theft, the following websites will provide you with additional information and a recommended course of action: ID Theft Center or Digital Insight Identity Theft Info

What is Phishing, Pharming, and Spoofing?
Phishing (FISH.ing): Phishing is e-mail fraud where the perpetrator sends out legitimate-looking e-mails that appear to come from well known and trustworthy Web sites in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from the recipient. A phishing expedition, like the fishing expedition it's named for, is a speculative venture: the phisher puts the lure hoping to fool at least a few of the prey that encounter the bait.

Vishing: a variation of phishing where identity thieves include a phone number, usually an inexpensive VoIP (Voice over internet protocol) number that is easy to obtain anonymously, to trick victims into calling and sharing their credit card account information.

Pharming (FARM.ing): Pharming is a scamming practice in which malicious code is installed on a personal computer or server, misdirecting users to fraudulent Web sites without their knowledge or consent. Pharming has been called "phishing without a lure."

Spoofing: E-mail spoofing is the forgery of an e-mail header so that the message appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. Distributors of spam often use spoofing in an attempt to get recipients to open, and possibly even respond to, their solicitations.

** Remember, Select Bank & Trust Company will NEVER send you an email asking for confidential information. If you receive an email asking for confidential information, DO NOT RESPOND.
